I bought the book with high expectations, but I was totally disappointed half way and had to return it. The book starts with a lecture on political correctness and continues with the condescending tone of the instructor regarding how he knows the best and everybody else in the field is only partially correct. Considering the broad scope of the book, the subjects on which particular details are provided are off. There are whole chapters on going into tedious details of the methodology used in some studies and point by point refutal of pieces of different people's studies and particular findings that bear no importance on understanding the great picture. These discussions extend to methodology as well. Yes, every scientific method has limitations, yes not all branches of science are as precise as we'd like them to be, but what's the point of spending 20 minutes on trying to refute the use of most basic archeological methods such as carbon-14 measurements while you can just say it can be off by X years and move on?In other chapters, there are tedious details on aspects of different cultures that have absolutely no contribution to our greater understanding. For example, there is an in depth discussion of shapes and ratios and heights of the mounds and buildings to simply make the point that these cultures knew advanced mathematics. It's almost like reading the book of Leviticus to try to understand the culture and history of the biblical times just by looking at the measures of temples and the materials to be used in these buildings. Another tedious thing is pointless deep discussions of methodology or findings that the instructor believes to be objectively wrong. If they're objectively wrong, what is the point of these long discussions? It's almost like spending 30 minutes to explain the flat earth theories in a documentary about the solar system because they are around.Overall, the half of the book I could endure only taught me that the Native Americans originate from Asia, they were good bison hunters, and there are two main branches of Native American culture in North America and some build pretty good and well-designed mounds whereas the others don't. You don't need to buy a book to learn this little.
Many of us grow up with the impression that there were no significant Native American civilizations north of Mexico prior to European colonization. That's not correct. Much of what we usually think we know about North America prior to European contact is in fact a result of European contact. Europeans brought Eurasian diseases even when they weren't violent and destructive on their own--as they so often were. Die-offs due to diseases the inhabitants had no prior exposure to and hence no resistance to, destructively violent raids and burning of cities and towns, changes created due to the horses and the pigs Europeans brought--all caused major changes, and in multiple ways wiped out much of what was here before, usually with few good records.Barnhart is a very good lecturer, lively, interesting, informative. He has a self-deprecating humor about areas where he disagrees with his colleagues, and is respectful when talking about others' ideas that he is not wholly convinced of. This is an absolutely engrossing tour of pre-European North America, from what we've been able to learn of the earliest arrivals, to the nations and ways of life that existed when Europeans reached the various parts of North America. Farmers, astronomers, urban planners, engineers, all created great works only some of which survive even as ruins today.I'd have loved to see more in-depth discussion of the bio-engineering of maize (corn) out of far less useful plants, or of the Iroquois Confederation, its formation, growth, and influence on the design of the US Constitution, but this is not that book. This is a tour, a survey, an introduction, and it's a fascinating one. The points on which you want to go chase down more information may be different from mine, but you will have them.Highly recommended.I bought this audiobook.
If you've watched and loved the previous programs Ed Barnhart has done on South America and Mesoamerica you'll love this one too. The first few episodes are a little slow but it does get better. I'd recommend viewing the actual video version of this program instead of just audiobooks. Because it is better to get a good sense at times what he's talking about when you can see it. He does explain some about dating techniques at the beginning as another review pointed out because most of the places in this program don't have exact dates from calendar systems like in the South America and Mesoamerica programs. But overall it's a great program and I learned a lot of new stuff.
